Get ready for an exciting season opener as the AFL world gears up for a thrilling encounter!
The Navy Blue Revolution
Carlton has unveiled its 23-man squad, a fresh and rejuvenated team, to face Sydney in the opening match. With seven new faces, the Blues are set to bring a whole new energy to the field.
Among the newcomers are Jagga Smith and Harry Dean, who will make their AFL debuts, adding an air of excitement and anticipation. Joining them are five talented recruits from last year's trade period: Ben Ainsworth, Campbell Chesser, Ollie Florent, Will Hayward, and Liam Reidy.
But here's where it gets controversial... This is only the second time in a century that seven or more players will debut for the Navy Blues in a single game! A historic moment, indeed.
And this is the part most people miss... There are a whopping 13 changes from the last Carlton team that played for premiership points in 2025. An entire new look and feel to the side!
Among the returning players is Brodie Kemp, who will finally make his 50th career appearance. Elijah Hollands also makes a comeback, last seen in action against the Swans in May 2025.
The leadership group remains intact with captain Patrick Cripps and his co-vice captains Sam Walsh and Jacob Weitering leading the charge. Weitering, who recovered from a rib injury sustained during AFL Origin, is confirmed to be in the starting lineup.
In addition to these changes, the AFL has introduced some exciting rule modifications. The sub role has been scrapped, allowing teams to freely rotate their 23 players throughout the game, with a maximum of 75 interchanges. No more centre bounces, either! It's a new era for the competition.
So, as we gear up for this historic match, what are your thoughts on the new-look Carlton and the AFL's rule changes? Do you think these moves will revolutionize the game? Or is it a step too far? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
