Bold truth: Conan O’Brien is finally opening up about the night that connected two legendary careers with a devastating ending. He shares new reflections on the party at his home where Rob Reiner, Michele Singer Reiner, and their son Nick spent the couple’s final evening before they were killed the next day in December.
“I knew Rob and Michele, and I was getting closer to them,” O’Brien said on The New Yorker Radio Hour this Friday. “My wife and I were seeing them a lot. To say goodnight to someone, have them leave, and then learn the next day that they’re gone… I was in a state of shock for quite a while.”
He described the experience as indescribably awful, saying, “There’s just no other word for it. It’s so terrible.”
Shortly after the gruesome Brentwood murders of the film icon and his wife on December 14, reports emerged that the couple had spent their last evening at O’Brien’s party. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, who has since been charged with their murders, attended with his parents and was reportedly brought to the gathering “to keep an eye on him.”
Nick Reiner remains in custody without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility. He has a documented history of addiction struggles, which his father had believed were under control as recently as September, according to NPR.
TMZ cited a source claiming Nick Reiner had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was receiving treatment at a specialized facility for both addiction and schizophrenia at the time of the killings. The source further asserted that the medication allegedly caused “erratic and dangerous” behavior.
O’Brien avoided speculation and instead reflected on what the loss of a friend means in the modern world of culture and media.
“I often think about how Rob felt about the country, how engaged he was, how much he stepped into the fray,” O’Brien said. “And to hear his voice go quiet in an instant is something I still can’t fully grasp.”
O’Brien called Reiner “larger than life,” contemplating his body of work and noting that Reiner produced several classics in rapid succession, including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally, among others from the 1980s and 1990s. “If you can make one great movie, that’s impressive. If you can make two, you’re among the greats. To make seven, in roughly a decade, feels almost crazy.”
