Cyclone Mitchell: A Powerful Threat Demands Immediate Action
As Cyclone Mitchell bears down on Western Australia's northern coast, residents are facing a critical situation. With the potential for flash floods and intense rainfall, the emergency warning to shelter indoors remains in effect.
This category two cyclone, packing winds up to 120km/h, has already caused significant impact. Almost 2000 properties have lost power, and the cyclone's path has brought it close to Exmouth, about 115km away, and Carnarvon, 230km to the north.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite being downgraded from a category three, senior meteorologist Angus Hines emphasizes that Cyclone Mitchell is still a "really powerful weather system." He predicts it will make landfall on Monday afternoon, potentially causing further damage.
And this is the part most people miss... The cyclone's path has taken it directly over some Pilbara islands, showcasing the full force of its winds. Legendre Island recorded a staggering 169km/h wind gust, while Barrow Island saw 148km/h gusts. Onslow, Karratha, and Mardie have also experienced strong winds, with Karratha recording 124mm of rain over the weekend.
Flooding remains a major concern, not just for the immediate coastal areas but also further inland as the decaying cyclone moves southwards. Horizon Power estimates that power will be restored to Exmouth by 4pm on Monday, but the threat to lives and homes persists.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a clear directive: stay indoors and shelter in the safest part of your building. With at least seven calls for assistance already made to State Emergency Services, the potential for damage and disruption is high.
As the cyclone moves south-southwest at 13km/h, it is expected to impact the Ningaloo and Carnarvon coastlines on Monday morning. It will then track southeast, crossing the Gascoyne coastline and continuing over land as a category two system on Monday night. At least 17 schools have been forced to close, and evacuation centers have been set up in Exmouth, Onslow, and Carnarvon.
