A bold move by Chancellor Rachel Reeves has sparked controversy and raised concerns among UK drivers. In a recent announcement, Reeves confirmed a new pay-per-mile tax targeting electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid owners, a decision that has left many feeling uncertain about the future of sustainable transportation.
But here's where it gets controversial: this new tax, set to take effect in April 2028, aims to bridge the gap in fuel duty revenue as more motorists make the switch to electric. EV owners will be charged 3 pence per mile, while plug-in hybrid drivers will pay 1.5 pence per mile.
For instance, imagine a driver covering 10,000 miles annually; they'd be looking at an additional £300 in costs. And this is the part most people miss: the average British motorist drives around 8,500 miles a year, but many travel significantly more, especially those with long commutes or living in rural areas.
The government argues that petrol and diesel vehicle owners already pay similar fees through fuel costs and taxes. However, the impact on EV owners, who may have initially invested in these vehicles for the exemption from road tax, is undeniable.
Treasury minister Dan Tomlinson shed light on the government's plans, stating, "The introduction of Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) will ensure all car drivers contribute, but it will also maintain incentives to switch to electric vehicles."
A consultation document on the new charge further explains, "eVED will be set at half the rate of fuel duty for electric cars and a quarter for plug-in hybrids. This ensures a fair contribution while still encouraging the transition to electric."
Mileage verification will occur during annual MOT tests, with additional checks for cars under three years old at government-funded garages.
